Motor started knocking, the oils black with metallic flake, so far that about 1 month on the freshly rebuilt motor. Soon I’ll tear it down an hopefully learn what I did wrong but it’s hard to justify another rebuild at this point, the only reason I’d do that is to sell it easier

Kinja'd!!!

It’s been over 3 years with sc400's attempting to build basically the same car, alots been learned along the way but its time to move on. From here the decision is to part it out, sell it as is, or rebuild the motor and sell it.

Kinja'd!!!

Moneys tight right now especially considering the mini needs a rebuild Asap so itll be part out or As is. Not sure how much I’ll get, the dream is 4k but probably much-much less.

Throw in a stock engine without turbos and enjoy it. 1UZs can’t be that expensive.

The main thing about that is I want to keep the Megasquirt that was $1000 not too long ago

It will be sad to see it go especially on a wreckers flatbed

Ive got another one sitting but it needs to be rebuilt, that’s money I dont have. Going non turbo will require making a whole new exhaust(more money) , and the megasquirt/wiring harness will become pointless. Futher blowing money on this thing, I’ve been running on the sunk cost fallacy for years at this point

I was running on the assumption that you had stock parts that go around the engine.

Well I’d love to tell you “don’t give up” but sometimes you have to.

I regret selling my VR-4 Galant sometimes, but I was so done sinking money  and time into it.

Damn this is one hell of a disappointment. Its a shame that turbocharging the 1UZ isn’t a tried-and-true formula here in the States like it is for a JZ or something less exciting. I completely understand the walking away from it after spending all that time and money rebuilding the engine. That moment you heard the knock and pulled off the road is one I am familiar with, though I haven’t killed either of my 1UZ’s.

You learned a lot, made some awesome turbo noises, now take those experiences on to other things. I don’t think you would have much trouble selling the SC shell, somebody will just 2JZ swap it or something.

That fuse panel used to be on the driver side, like the vr4 its probably better if this is a memory

Maybe strip all the 1uz/ manual swap parts and sell the chassis w/interior and suspension? I appreciate the advice

You’ll get a lot more parting it out, if you’re willing to deal with the hassle. For what it’s worth, I started parting out my failed project this summer, and it’s been very cathartic actually. Granted, mine wasn’t nearly as long term or expensive as yours. It was just a Honda Helix that had quickly become an albatross around my neck, with more money dumped in than I could possibly get out. T aking it apart and seeing the parts go help fix non-cursed vehicles has been good for me. I’ve also gotten way more money for it than selling it whole.

This is sad.  Your new daily was supposed to be the reliable car so the SC could take time to get right.  I blame the mini.

At this point I’d done everything right with an engine rebuild, the stock components were supposed to be safe at 8psi and I went the extra $300 having mls lower compression HG’s.

That b eing said, the Mini is a piece of shit that's mopping up any extra money $12 per hr affords

Selling off the turbo system and manual swap is an option to fund a 1gzfe swap, where I’m located nobody will want the chassis so that may be a way to not lose all the  investment into suspension and brakes

Bummer, man. I think you’d do pretty well parting it out if you have the patience for it.

Haven’t you done a lot of suspension/chassis work too? Maybe sell of what you can in terms of drivetrain and pick it up with some vigor later on. Assuming you have somewhere to put it, can’t hurt to let it sit for a year or two before coming back to it.

Kinja'd!!! sony1492 > MM54

Kinja'd!!!1

You might be right.

I do have room to store it, and the main thing worth parting is the manual swap and turbo system . If I cant get what I want for the whole car itll probably get parted put for the high dollar bits  and the chassis can wait for a 1gzfe swap.

lol sorry man ... I lived with a Crossfire for 5 years after a 200k mile SC. So I understand the sadomasochist life.

FWIW my roommate had to replace the turbo on his stock abarth at 50k miles.  Nothing is perfect.

It's okay. Think of it as a life lesson. I know you could be nearing upsidedown-ness, but ever thought of cutting losses with the mini? Trade it in for something with zero pizazz but zero problems, recoup funds, then start a new project without being hindered?

The mini is doing what it was supposed to do, the key reason to finance a car was to build debt and credit so that later down the line I’ll be in a decent position to own property or finance /loan on something I actually need. It also was supposed to serve as a reliable, safer daily driver, all the options would require extra care but I dont think what the mini had in store could’ve been anticipated to be quite this bad.

The mini in it’s current state cant be worth much more then 3-4k, I’m not ready to pay 7k for an 04  corolla
